Ichigoni is a traditional dish from Iwate Prefecture. The name literally translates to ‘Boiled Strawberries’. However there aren’t any strawberries in this dish. This soup consists of sea urchin and abalone, but apparently the soup derived its name from the sea urchin floating in the soup resembling wild strawberries in the morning dew… A little bit of a stretch if you ask us, but regardless a delicious dish! Today, Ichigoni is available for purchase in cans, just simply warm it in a pan, or cook it with rice.
